I AM IRON

FAVORITE THINGS

"Be proud of what you are and where you came from."

FAVORITE THINGS

A fine day this was, many hours were consumed in gardening and it would have been a damnable shame to have spent it indoors. :)

Olexandra Salo with her cabbage near Lviv, Ukraine.

Farmer Olexandra Salo was very happy with her cabbage crop when I visited her farm in Ukraine. Potatoes and cabbage are two of the staple crops of small farmers in this rich farming country near the Black Sea. The rich soils of Ukraine make one of the world’s prime agricultural regions, but it has been hampered by slow development and the recent turmoil hurts even more. It is one of the regions of the world where the yield gap is greatest. We hope Olexandra is safe. She is just one of the farmers I photographed around the world for our National Geographic story in the May issue, Food: Feeding Nine Billion. — Jim Richardson
